Australian Champion Claims 11th World Title

Meares Retires as Track Cycling Legend

Australian cycling icon Anna Meares has retired from competition after winning a record-breaking 11th world title in the keirin at the UCI World Championships in Paris on Friday. Having also won two Olympic gold medals and a bronze medal during her illustrious career, 37-year-old Meares has cemented her status as the most decorated female track cyclist of all time. Meares' victory in Paris was her second in the keirin, having previously won the title in 2004. Her other nine world titles came in the team sprint (four), individual sprint (two), and 500-meter time trial (three). She also won medals in the individual pursuit, scratch race, and points race. In addition to her world and Olympic titles, Meares also won gold at the Commonwealth Games in 2006 and 2010, and at the Asian Games in 2006. She was awarded the Order of Australia Medal (OAM) in 2008 for her services to cycling and was inducted into the Sport Australia Hall of Fame in 2019.
