Aurora Borealis Expected To Light Up North American Skies Tonight
Rare Strong Aurora Predicted
Space-gazers are anticipating a rare strong aurora borealis over North America Friday night and as late as Saturday night. A map from the Space Weather Prediction Center shows the aurora may be visible for much of the northern United States and Canada, as well as parts of Alaska and the Yukon Territory.
What Is An Aurora Borealis?
An aurora borealis, also known as the "Northern Lights", is a natural light display in the Earth's sky, primarily visible at high latitude regions. It is caused by the interaction of charged particles from the sun with the Earth's magnetic field.
When And Where To See The Aurora
The aurora is most likely to be visible between 10pm and 2am local time. The best viewing locations are typically away from city lights, such as in rural areas or national parks.
